Golf Notes From Montauk Downs

The local golf season is just around the corner, and Montauk Downs has announced two programs of interest to local golfers. “The Hamptons Cup” is now entering its second season. A match-play team competition, it is open to two-man teams representing local restaurants. There is no limit to the number teams a restaurant may enter, and a total of 24 teams are expected to compete in series of 18-hole matches leading to a 36-hole net medal playoff. Advancing teams will battle for the cup (and cash) in a match-play finale.

The Downs is also sponsoring a Men’s League. Beginning on April 16, the league will run through October, offering a variety of playing formats including low gross, better ball, scramble, stableford, and blind draw partner. This is a terrific way to have fun while sharpening your competitive skills on a great course. Play is scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m., and you must have a USGA handicap to participate.

And in a free event open to all, the pro shop staff will conduct an informal seminar on Saturday, March 22, at 4 p.m. Topics will include why the average handicap hasn’t changed and ways to jump-start your season. A Powerpoint presentation will be followed by a question-and -answer session.

For more information on any of these events, call the pro shop at 668-1100.
