The Southampton boys indoor track team got its season started with its first crossover meet on December 9 at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, and followed up a strong performance there with another fine showing in the second meet, back at Suffolk West, on Sunday.
In the first meet, junior Nakia Williams won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet 10 inches. He equaled that height in Sunday’s meet, but finished third. Sophomore Sebastian Pereira won the triple jump at both meets, with a leap of 42 feet 7 and 1/4 inches in the first meet and a mark of 43 feet and 3/4 inches on Sunday. He also finished sixth in the long jump at the first meet, with a mark of 18 feet 9 and 3/4 inches.
Senior Jesse Scanlon proved he is still the one to beat in the 55-meter hurdles, picking up from where he left off last season. Scanlon won the event on Sunday with a time of 7.90 seconds. Southampton also did well in several distance events on Sunday, with athletes from the fall’s county and division championship cross country team continuing their strong performances. Gustavo Morastitla finished second in the 3,200-meter race in 10:34 and was fifth in the 1,600 in 4:55. Sebastian Hunter-Cuyjet was fourth in the 600-meter race in 1:30, while Jacob Villalobos (who played soccer in the fall) took 10th in 1:36. Cross country runners Ryan McCabe and Mike Minogue finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,000-meter race with times of 2:55 and 3:00.
The Lady Mariners racked up 13 personal-best marks in their second meet of the season at Suffolk West on Saturday. Gabby Gavalas finished fourth overall in the triple jump with a mark of 33 feet 1 and 1/2 inches. She is aiming to break the school record of 34 feet 5 inches, set by Jackie Rodriguez in 2007. Other personal-best finishes included: Jillian Kolarik, who beat her previous best time in the 300-meter race by eight seconds, finishing in 64.6 seconds; Caroline Palumbo (48.5 seconds in the 300), Stephanie Schiavoni (54.6 in the 300 and 11.1 seconds in the 55 hurdles); Carly Cenzeprano (59.9 seconds in the 300 and 8.69 seconds in the 55 dash); Keilyn Castillo (4:09 in the 1,000); Bridget Grealish (25 feet 1/2 inch in the triple jump); Kayley Ritz (10.98 in the 55 hurdles); Marina Cirillo (9.1 in the 55 dash); Caitlyn Kirshy (9.3 seconds in the 55 dash); and Isabel Cuffee (8.43 seconds in the 55 dash).
The Lady Mariners were scheduled to compete in crossover meets at Suffolk West on December 16 and December 18, and won’t be back on the track after that until January 3 for the Art Mitchell Meet at Suffolk West. The boys were scheduled to compete in another crossover meet on December 19 and will then be off until a crossover meet on January 2.
