After getting swept by Southold/Greenport in its first League VIII series of the season, the Center Moriches baseball team rebounded by winning the first two games of a three-game set against Smithtown Christian, improving to 2-3 in league play. The Red Devils concluded the series against the Knights yesterday at home.
Kevin Lydon hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Red Devils a 9-8 lead in an eventual 10-8 win in Smithtown on Tuesday night. Center Moriches enjoyed a 6-0 win a day earlier at home against the Knights as Joe Gonzales pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Against Southold/Greenport, the Red Devils were less competitive as the series went on. After a 7-6 loss in the opener on April 1, the Red Devils were downed 5-3 at home the following day and finished the series with an 11-0 loss on April 5 on the North Fork. In the second game, an error in the sixth inning allowed the Clippers to score the winning run. In the final game, the Red Devils tallied only five hits against Southold/Greenport starter Rob Clausen, who struck out 10 batters for the shutout win.
Center Moriches will begin a series with Mercy on April 15 in Riverhead at 4:30 p.m. The series will continue in Center Moriches the following day, also at 4:30 p.m., and will conclude in Riverhead on April 18 at 4:30 p.m.
