Whalers swept by rival Mercy


The Pierson baseball team fell to 2-4 in League VIII, 3-4 overall after getting swept in a three-game series by Class C rival Mercy. The Whalers lost the opener at home 7-1 on April 8, lost the second game in Riverhead 8-4 and dropped the final game at home 9-6 on Friday.

Pierson managed only five hits and one earned run against Mercy’s Matt Small in the opener and tallied only three hits and one earned run in the second game.

Mike DePetris took the loss on the mound for Pierson in the final game, while sophomore Kyle McGowin was the losing pitcher in the second game and junior Joe Mascali was tagged with the loss in the opener.

The Whalers will complete a three-game series with Stony Brook at home tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The first two games were scheduled on April 15 and 16. The team will begin a series with Center Moriches at home on April 21 at 10 a.m., followed by a double-header in Center Moriches on April 22, with games at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
