A belated but sincere thank you to Southampton Town Trustee President Jon Semlear for tightening enforcement of the laws governing the construction and maintenance of docks, particularly with respect to the use of lumber impregnated with copper, chromium and arsenic.
As a longtime advocate of eliminating toxic CCA lumber from our environment, I am heartened by this resolve to hold construction of docks and bulkhead replacements to proper and now lawful standards. Under Jon’s watch, we are moving in a new direction—one that is consistent with science, common sense and serious execution of serious duties.
It was encouraging to have, at last, the Trustees speak at a Town Board meeting on behalf of our waters. When the studies of waterfront development finally get under way, we look forward to having our Trustees fight for legislation that will help restore the integrity of our surface waters and the life they should support.
