The Pierson softball team emerged with an 11-9 win at Mattituck on Monday after a back-and-forth game. The Lady Whalers clinched the win in the seventh inning when Sam Federico—who led off with a double—scored on a two-out base hit by Sarah Mayer that put Pierson up 10-9. Nell Kruszynski, who was pinch-running for Sarah Mayer, scored the final run after the Mattituck outfielder misplayed a ball hit into right field by Devan Larsen.
Kara Gengarelly had a base hit in the sixth inning that brought home Larsen, who had reached base on a walk, to tie the game at 9-9.
Pierson is now 4-3 in league play, 4-5 overall.
