Fondly remembered

Our family would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank members of the Southampton Fire Department, especially Chief Joe Corr, and members of the Village Police Department for the tribute paid to our Dad, former Southampton Village Mayor Peter J. Majkowski Jr., on the occasion of his funeral on April 22.

During the time of Dad’s administration, from 1971 to 1979, the fire department and the Village Police Department reported directly to the mayor. Their respectful presence at the O’Connell Funeral Home and the dignified procession en route to the cemetery touched us deeply.

Though Dad retired from office in 1979, it is so gratifying to know that he continued to be a relevant, respected and remembered resident of the Southampton he loved so dearly. When he was running for office in the early 1970s, someone asked him what his political affiliation was. His answer, “I’m just a civic-minded citizen,” hit the nail on the head, as he liked to say. Indeed he was, and continued to be for the rest of his life, keenly interested in the affairs and well-being of the village.

Thank you, too, Mayor Mark Epley and former mayors William Hattrick, Douglas Murtha and Joseph Romanosky, for your presence, your reminiscences and your kind expressions of sympathy. We can say for sure that Dad would have been thrilled to know that his beloved Southampton remembered him in such a meaningful way.
