The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has declared most shellfishing grounds on the East End off limits to harvesting in the wake of heavy rains on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The closures will be in effect until at least December 19 due to concerns about contamination from polluted rainwater runoff.
In Southampton Town the closures apply to all town waters, including Flanders Bay, Cold Spring Pond, North Sea Harbor, Noyac Creek, Sag Harbor, Sag Harbor Cove, Moriches Bay, Shinnecock Bay and their tributaries.
In East Hampton Town the closures apply to Montauk Harbor, Napeague Harbor, Accabonac Harbor, Three Mile Harbor, and Hog Creek and Northwest Harbor around the mouth of Northwest Creek.
In Brookhaven Town the closures will apply to the northern portions of Great South Bay, Patchogue Bay and all of Bellport Bay.
Shellfish grounds will be reopened when water sampling shows bacteria levels have lowered to safe levels again. Shellfish harvester can call the DEC at 444-0480 for updates on the closures.
