Kelsey, Hren place high once again

East Hampton junior Joel Kelsey continues to do well this winter as he led all Bonacker place-winners at a crossover meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Sunday with a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet 9 inches. Victor Drew of Amityville won the contest with a jump of 20-4.

Junior Brenden Mott placed fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 38-5, while senior Gregg Slevenski finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 38-7.

East Hampton will return to SCCC-Brentwood on Friday for another crossover meet at 5 p.m.

The Lady Bonacker indoor track team was once again led by senior Emily Hren who won the high jump event with a leap of 5-4 at a crossover meet at SCCC-Brentwood on Saturday.

Hren was just continuing what she had accomplished on Friday at the Bishop Loughlin Games at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City where she was champion of the high jump with a leap of 5-6. She
beat out Chelsea Pinkett of Delcastle, Betsy Dempsey of Methacton and Janelle Clayton of Suffern who all cleared 5-4.

As for the rest of the Lady Bonackers at the crossover meet on Saturday, only sophomore Jessica Warner of Pierson was able to place in the top 25. She placed 22nd in the 55-meter dash in 8.84 seconds and 24th in the 300-meter dash in 56.89 seconds.

East Hampton head coach Yani Cuesta said the season has been cut short because a crossover meet was cancelled due to bad weather a few weeks ago and the fact that she missed the last crossover because she was on vacation over the holidays but she is content on seeing the girls improve throughout the season.

“We’re doing alright,” she said. “We have a really tiny team this year. Most of the girls came back behind personal bests to start the season. The only problem now is we don’t have the fluidity because of weather cancellations and such.”

The Lady Bonackers were back at SCCC-Brentwood for a crossover meet on Tuesday, which took place too late to be included in this week’s issue. They will have another meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Brentwood.
