With his family by his side, James Edward Leonard of Sagaponack died on January 2 at Southampton Hospital following a series of illnesses. He was 70.
Born September 23, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, in an Irish Catholic family, he attended St. Ignatius Prep School and John Carroll University. He played many sports, and was a major sports fan; he was also an avid reader of historical novels.
In 1961 he moved to San Francisco, California, where he met Mary Louise “Mimi” Hildreth. The two were married in 1964.
His job in sales with the Celotex Corporation required that he and his family move from California to Minnesota, Illinois, and finally Ramsey, New Jersey, where they lived for many years. He joined Sloan Acoustics as vice president and general manager in 1980 and worked there until his retirement in 1991. Subsequently, the couple moved to Sagaponack, where his wife’s extended family resides.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, Mary Louise, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Hahn of New Jersey and Amy Leonard of Washington; a sister; five grandchildren; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family received visitors on January 4 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton, where a prayer service was conducted by Reverend Monsignor Ronald Richardson. A funeral mass was held on January 5 at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Bridgehampton, also with Monsignor Richardson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Bridgehampton Ambulance, 64 School Street, Bridgehampton, NY 11932 or St. Ignatius College Prep, 1076 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL 60608, or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
