The Pierson girls basketball team dominated Mercy 52-22 on January 6 and got past Southold 51-48 on Monday night in a pair of home games. With five games left in the season, the Lady Whalers are 3-0 in League VIII, 6-3 overall, and they only need one more win to make the playoffs.
“We played very well” against Mercy, Pierson head coach Dennis Case said. “We played well as a team in one of the best games all year.” The Lady Whalers were up 30-11 at the half and 49-17 after the third period.
“I think we’re playing better,” Case said, noting that the team is rebounding better and more consistently.
The game against Southold was a thriller, with the Lady Whalers falling behind 42-31 heading into the fourth quarter before making an impressive comeback. In the final four minutes of the game, Pierson went on a 16-0 run to steal the victory. Senior guard Katie Osiecki finished with 21, while senior guard Ala Pinckney scored 19 points, including three three-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Along with Pierson, Stony Brook is the only undefeated team in League VIII.
“The team to beat” is Stony Brook, Case said, noting that the Lady Whalers would be facing them on Wednesday. “If we play our A game, we can beat them,” he said, explaining that Osiecki is the best guard and one of the best players in the league. Osiecki scored 19 points against Mercy last week, followed by Pinckney with 13 points.
The Lady Whalers will be back on the court on January 23 when they host Shelter Island at 5:45 p.m.
