Local Democrats elect new leader

At a special meeting on Thursday, January 8, the Southampton Town Democratic Party tapped Gordon Herr to take the reins from Mike Anthony, who retired after two years as committee chairman.

“Mike was an extraordinary leader and was able to bring people together to form an effective and vibrant Democratic committee,” said Mr. Herr, a Southampton Village resident who is the manager of marketing and business development for Hardy Plumbing.

Mr. Herr moved from New York City to the village two years ago. Born in Northern Rhodesia, which is now Zambia, he attended university and spent much of his time in South Africa. Now a U.S. citizen, he has lived in the States for 29 years.

Though stepping down as party leader, Mr. Anthony said he plans to stay active in local politics and added that he had full confidence in his successor’s ability to build on the party’s recent achievements.
