Local civil rights leader honored by town

A local civil rights leader was recognized for a lifetime of community service by Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot on Monday. Former Westhampton Beach Village mayor and trustee Arma E. “Ham” Andon was singled out by the supervisor for carrying out the “clarion call of freedom and equality” echoed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

A founding member of the Southampton Town Anti-Bias Task Force and decorated World War II veteran, Mr. Andon was presented with a proclamation by the supervisor at the 24th Annual Martin Luther King Breakfast hosted by the First Baptist Church of Riverhead.

The proclamation states, in part, “Ham has been a member of and actively participated in numerous veterans, civic, fire department, business and benevolent organizations … he continues to work tirelessly to protect the rights won through the sacrifices of Dr. King and other civil rights leaders.”
