Track teams compete at League V Championships

Several members of the Hampton Bays girls winter track team had strong performances at the League V Championships at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Sunday.

In the 55-meter hurdles, Samantha Makis took 10th in 10.9 seconds, while her teammate Nicole Gunther finished in 11.6 seconds. In the 55-meter dash, Kate Dubowsky was ninth in 8.11 seconds, while Meridythe Donnan finished 11th in 8.15 seconds.

In the 300-meter race, Samantha Fagereng finished in 51.9 seconds, while Makis followed in 53.5 seconds. In the 600, Priscilla Quiroz was 11th in 1:57, while Sandra Cuccia took 16th in 2:04.

In the 1,000, Alyssya Bowen was 12th with a personal-best time of 3:45, and teammate Stefi Joslin took 15th in 3:50.5.

Quiroz completed the 1,500-meter racewalk in 8:23, while Yvette Zamarano finished the same event in 9:27. In the long jump, Donnaon was sixth with a mark of 14-feet 5-inches, while Dubowsky had a leap of 13-4 1/2. Gunther had a personal-best mark of 27-8 in the triple jump, while Anna Blydenburgh had a mark of 27-1 1/2.

The 4×200-meter relay team of Donnan, Fagereng, Dubowsky and Blydenburgh had a school record time of 2:04.1, and the 4×8 team of Bowen, Joslin, Makis and Cuccia finished in 12:14.

The Suffolk County Championship meet will take place on Saturday at Suffolk West, and Hampton Bays head coach Dave Oakley said he expects Donnan and Dubowsky to qualify in the 55-meter dash. He also expects distance runner Sarah Reed—who did not compete at leagues—to qualify in the 1,500-meter race. The top 24 performers in each event qualify for the county meet.

Westhampton Beach Girls

The Lady Hurricanes had several good performances at the League V meet as well. Amber Selig was third in the 1,000-meter race in 3:21.54, followed by teammate Lindsay Andarakis, who was seventh in 3:36.31 and teammate Christa Kearns, who was ninth in 3:40.44. Sarah Weigand was second in the 1,500-meter racewalk in 8:28.77, and Devon Clarke was third in the high jump with a mark of 4-8.

In the 600, Coryn Cange was eighth in 1:53.53, Brianna Spano was 14th in 1:59.21 and Karlyn Sabo was 17th in 2:06.84.

Lila Miller had a good day, taking 16th in the 55-meter dash in 8.22 seconds and taking 13th in the 300 in 47.08 seconds.

In the 1,500, Remy Kneski was fifth in 5:29.77, while Kaylene Mason was 14th in 5:57.33. In the 3,000, Mason was 10th in 12:48.91, and Sabo was 11th in 12:52.62.

Morgan Wilcox took 11th in the 55-meter hurdles in 11.35 seconds, and the 4×800-meter relay team was third in 11:09.38. The names of the runners were not available.

Westhampton Beach Boys

Sophomore distance runner Forest Gilbakian had a nice day at the League V meet on Saturday at Suffolk West, finishing fourth in the 3,200 in 10:22.50, while taking fifth in the 1,600 in 4:58.73. Junior Alex Choi finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.75 seconds and was eighth in the 300 in 40.86 seconds.

Brandon Penn, a sophomore, was eighth in the 3,200 in 10:56.10.

The boys small schools championship will take place at Suffolk West on Monday, February 2, and the boys county championship meet will take place at Suffolk West February 10.
