The Eastport South Manor wrestling team picked up two victories last week, a 53-28 win at Stony Brook on January 20 and a 57-20 triumph over Half Hollow Hills West on Friday.
The Sharks did lose a tough match in Kings Park by 56-8 on January 21 though.
Maverick Passaro, at 112 pounds, was one of the best wrestlers for ESM last week going 3-0 with two pins and a win by technical fall. He pinned Hills West’s Ryan Carter in 5:40, got his Kings Park opponent in 2:48 and defeated Stony Brook’s Austin Hulse 19-4.
Captain Jon Mercado (125) also did well for ESM matching Passaro’s record of 3-0 last week. Mercado defeated his Hill West opponent by technical fall in 3:40, beat his Kings Park opponent by a count of 6-2 and bested Stony Brook’s Joon Park by technical fall 20-4.
Levi Ostler (103) also drew some praise from ESM head coach Nick Garone, going 2-1 last week. He defeated Paul Chung of Stony Brook by technical fall 19-4 and his Hills West opponent by pin in 2:28. His only loss came in the match against Kings Park, when he fell 9-2.
“Maverick, once again, did really well,” Garone said. “Jon Mercado did the same thing. I’m just really impressed with the both of them. And I can’t say enough about Levi Ostler. No matter who he’s up against, he’s always right in the mix.”
Garone said his team has been working hard throughout the season and last week he told them “there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”
ESM will have a non-league match, which it will host on Thursday, against West Islip at 5:30 p.m. and will wrestle its final League IV match of the season in West Babylon at 5 p.m. the following day.
