Bishop Urges Those Making $57,000 Or Less To Take Advantage Of Free Tax Preperation

U.S. Representative Tim Bishop is urging residents earning $57,000 or less per year to take advantage of free federal income tax preparation and e-filing services available through the IRS Free File program.

The program, in existence since 2003, allows low- to moderate-income taxpayers to prepare, complete and e-file their federal tax returns at absolutely no cost through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a non-profit coalition of industry-leading tax software companies.

“This tax season, I encourage Long Islanders to take advantage of online and in-person resources to answer your questions about your taxes and help prepare and e-file you federal tax returns,” Mr. Bishop said. “These services are here to help you at absolutely no cost.”

In order to take advantage of the program, taxpayers with a 2012 adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less can visit the IRS website at Users will find a list of 15 free file alliance member companies and may either choose one that fits their needs or utilize the “Help Me Find a Company” tool. After selecting a tax software company, users will be transferred to the third party company’s website to prepare, complete and electronically file their federal income tax returns. The service is also available in Spanish.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, a walk-in service for low- to moderate-income taxpayers offers e-filing services for taxpayers who do not have internet access at home, as well as those who want to e-file, but need additional help. In addition, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program offers free tax help for all with priority assistance to people who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors.
