Last Thursday, students celebrated great stories with a Storytellers Festival. This was the culmination of a month-long exploration of storytelling with Hayground teachers and visiting artists and storytellers, Hawk Henries and Gale Jackson.
Students shared original stories, poetry and mythological stories from many different cultures. Ireland, Zimbabwe, the Anansi people, Native Americans and Greece were among them. Plans are already underway for next year’s festival.
Mbachi and Erin’s class visited the Parrish Art Museum last week. They looked at self-portraits by Fairfield Porter and William Merritt Chase, as well as a landscape by April Gornik. The children made insightful and poetic observations of the paintings, and then created their own portraits in the museum’s classroom. They are displayed on the classroom wall.
