The Pierson softball team moved to 6-4 in League VIII play after dropping two of its last three games.
The Lady Whalers cruised to a 17-0 home win over Southampton in a five-inning affair on April 23, but the week went downhill from there for Pierson. The following day, the Lady Whalers lost a heartbreaker at Hampton Bays (7-3 in League VII, 7-4 overall), falling 8-7 to the Lady Baymen despite having a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the final inning. On Friday, Pierson was downed 7-2 at home by Bayport/Blue Point (7-2 in League VII, 8-3 overall).
In the loss to Hampton Bays, Lady Bayman Mackenzie Tyler was the hero, smashing an RBI single with two outs to win the game. Against Bayport, the Lady Whalers were stymied by pitcher Kathleen Bailey, who struck out 11 batters.
Pitcher Sam Duchemin took the loss for Pierson in both games.
Against Southampton, the Lady Whalers scored early and often, and Duchemin pitched the shutout. Emma Romeo hit a grand slam in the second inning, putting Pierson up 5-0, and Kasey Gilbride hit a homer in the fourth that put Pierson up 10-0.
Southampton Wins Wild Game
The Lady Mariners (3-7 in League VII, 3-8 overall) rebounded from their loss to Pierson and a 15-3 home loss to Babylon (7-3 in League VIII, 8-4 overall) on April 24 by beating Mercy (4-6 in League VIII) in a wild game, prevailing 21-17 in a 10-inning affair in Riverhead on Friday.
Mercy forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, making it 18-18. Neither team scored in the eighth, and then each team scored a run in the ninth. In the 10th inning, Lady Mariner Jenna Hegel drove in the winning run with a double in the top of the 10th inning, and Southampton managed to keep Mercy off the board in the bottom of the frame to earn the win.
Emily Goleski pitched the full 10 innings for Southampton to earn the win. Chloe Scheuch hit a home run in the game for Southampton.
