Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation on Wednesday morning conducting a search as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
“We are doing a search in connection with an ongoing investigation. We are not in a position to comment about what that investigation relates to or is about,” said Peter Donald, an FBI spokesman, noting that the investigation is criminal.
According to a member of the tribe who asked not to be identified, about 10 FBI agents accompanied by several New York State Troopers came onto the reservation sometime before 8 a.m.
They were seen removing files and searching the offices of the tribal gaming authority, the appointed panel of five tribe members who has handled contract negotiations with Gateway Resort Casinos.
They were also seen entering the house of one of the gaming authority members.
A sergeant who answered the phone at the State Police barracks in Riverside on Wednesday morning referred all questions to the FBI.
