Eastport Community Notes, May 16

I was the lone person buying a birthday card at the local drugstore on Saturday while they were three-deep in the Mother’s Day card section. At the butcher, there was a dad with two toddlers clinging to him asking the butcher how long he would have to cook the Chicken Cordon Bleu, while asking someone on the other end of his cell phone how many pounds of sausage to buy. The grocery store aisles and checkout lines were jam-packed with what looked like mostly dads with confused looks on their faces as they peered into their shopping carts like they were looking into a dangerous abyss.
The line at the deli was longer than usual—dads again, talking sports and asking each other, “What the heck is chipotle chicken?” “How about them Yankees?” “Are you going to watch the Islanders tonight?” “Is there really a difference between Hellman’s mayonnaise and Miracle Whip?”

It’s not easy being a dad or a grandpa or an offspring the day before Mother’s Day. I could see that. But thanks, everyone, for making sure we had a great day. Now you can sit back and relax: Father’s Day is next month, and you have a whole year to recover from the second Sunday in May!

Just a reminder to Eastport South Manor Central School District residents that the annual budget vote is set for May 21. Voting will take place at the high school that day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
