The Eastport South Manor girls lacrosse team finds itself in the Suffolk County Class B finals for the second consecutive season after its 14-5 victory over Rocky Point at home in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The Lady Sharks will face the winner of the other semifinal game, Sayville or Harborfields, next Thursday, May 30, at the Dowling College Sports Complex in Shirley. The game starts at 5 p.m.
ESM took a one-goal lead with 5:16 remaining in the first half Tuesday when Kristen Anderson found a wide-open Jackie Wasilko cutting across the middle, and she buried her goal top shelf. The Lady Sharks never relinquished the lead, as they led 5-3 at halftime and went on a 4-0 run to start the second half to put the game out of reach for Rocky Point, which only scored two second-half goals.
Anderson finished the game with a hat trick and two assists while Dakota Mason scored five goals and had an assist. Wasilko also scored a hat trick.
ESM Softball Wins
The Eastport South Manor softball team advanced to the second round of the Suffolk County Class A playoffs with a 6-2 home victory over Bayport/Blue Point on Tuesday.
The second seed Lady Sharks will host number six Rocky Point at 4 p.m. this afternoon while the Lady Phantoms move to the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament to face third seed Islip.
The Lady Sharks got all the offense they would need in the first inning, scoring three runs thanks to a two-run double off the bat of Marissa Rizzi, followed by a RBI double by Jackie Chester.
After jumping out to that early lead, the Lady Sharks got a bit of a scare when the first batter of the second inning drilled pitcher Rizzi in the shin with a line drive. Rizzi went down after getting hit, but got up, walked it off and retired the next three batters in order to show she wouldn’t be denied. She kept their bats silent for the remainder of the game, allowing just one earned run while giving up four hits.
ESM scored twice in the bottom of the third and once in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 6-0. The Lady Phantoms put their runs on the board in the top of the fifth with an unearned run and then another in the top of the sixth.
