Rain Forces Pierson Softball And Baseball To Suspend Games On Tuesday

The Pierson baseball and softball teams and the Southampton baseball team have been waiting anxiously to play for county championships, but bad weather has forced multiple postponements of their games.

On Tuesday, Southampton made the call to cancel its Suffolk County Class B championship game with Mattituck and move it to Wednesday, May 29, at 4 p.m. Pierson, meanwhile, rolled the dice but could not finish either the softball or baseball game.

The Pierson and Port Jefferson softball teams played to a 1-1 tie after six innings in Sag Harbor before rain suspended what was the first game of a best-of-three series for the Suffolk County Class C title. Play will resume tomorrow, May 29, at Port Jefferson, in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied at one apiece. The teams will immediately begin playing the second game of the series once that first game concludes. Play is set to begin at 4 p.m.

Port Jefferson was the first team to strike on Tuesday. Riley Lim-Ellis hit a solid line-drive single to centerfield for the first hit of the game off Pierson starting pitcher Sam Duchemin in the top of the fourth inning. After a wild pitch and a passed ball, Lim-Ellis wound up on third base. Eventually, Morgan Sakovich hit a line drive over a leaping Kasey Gilbride at shortstop to drive in Lim-Ellis with the first run of the game.

The Lady Royals held the 1-0 lead through a steady rain until the bottom of the sixth inning. Duchemin, with one out, singled up the middle, then Julia Schiavoni was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to put runners on first and second. Meg Schiavoni then bunted to sacrifice both players but the Port Jefferson third baseman threw the ball wide of first base and Duchemin came around to tie the game at 1-1. With runners on first and third base, Isabel Peters hit a ball deep enough to right field, but the pinch runner that was in for Julia Schiavoni at third base did not tag up.

The following Pierson batter struck out with the go-ahead run on third base and then the umpires convened with both coaches and decided to suspend the game.

The Pierson baseball team, meanwhile, jumped on Port Jefferson early, taking an 8-0 lead after three innings of play. RBI doubles by Aaron Schiavoni and Jack Fitzpatrick as well as two-run double by Forrest Loesch and a bases-loaded walk by Jack Fitzpatrick were the highlights in a prolific third inning for Pierson. At the conclusion of the third, the Pierson coaching staff, including head coach Jon Tortorella, attempted to improve the field conditions by pouring bags of sand on the pitching mound, but as soon as they finished that, the umpires convened and decided to suspend the game. Play will resume back in Sag Harbor on Wednesday, May 29, with Pierson leading 8-0 to start the fourth inning. A win in that game will give Pierson the Suffolk County Class C championship.
