The second-graders in April Carone’s class made a presentation about community helpers. They have been studying about the differences between rural, urban and suburban areas and tied those concepts in to the careers they envisioned for themselves in the future. There was a PowerPoint of their artwork depicting the various careers they had chosen.

Esther Ricker from the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the American Legion came to Morning Program to tell our students about Memorial Day. She made a PowerPoint presentation and explained the history of the poppy as a symbol or our gratitude to the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Physical education teacher Hank Katz announced the latest members of our Milers Club at Morning Program. These are students who consistently run or walk more than the requisite daily lap around our fitness trail. The following students were awarded a certificate and T-shirt: Orchid Coffin, Sawyer Davey, Ryder Esposito, Axel Fernandez, Cooper Kelsey, Thijs Lauer, Alexa Lignelli, Jake Mojeski, JJ Murray, Mike Ayala Quezada, Ella Sabin and Sophia Villeneuve.

At Morning Program, Principal Matthew Malone introduced members of the Sag Harbor Whalers, our team from the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. Many of these players are being sponsored by and residing with families of our students during the season. They each announced the college they will be attending, as well as their area of study. Team manager and coach Brendan Monaghan spoke to the children about the importance of working hard in school. Coach Monaghan and parent Sandi Kruel presented Mr. Malone, a dedicated Mets fan, with a plaque and bobble head doll of Mets legend John Franco. School nurse Margaret Pulkingham talked at Morning Program about the importance of eating a nutritious breakfast. The entire student body danced to a video called “Think Breakfast,” which they had learned in class with music teacher Gavin Lahann.

Pre-K and kindergarten registration for the 2013-14 school year is under way. Registration must be completed in person with Kristen Doerr at Pierson High School. Registration hours are generally between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; call (631) 735 5302, extension 456, to make an appointment. There will be a new kindergartner visitation day on Friday, June 7, at 12:45 p.m. for all incoming kindergartners who are fully registered. Current kindergartners will be dismissed at 11 a.m. that day.
