While they failed to qualify an athlete for the New York State Track and Field Championships, the Eastport South Manor and Westhampton Beach boys and girls track teams did garner some All-County honors at the Section XI State Qualifier at Port Jefferson High School last week.
Westhampton Beach’s Annica Penn won the 1,500-meter race walk in 6:49.74, well ahead of the second-place finisher Monika Farmer of Connetquot, who crossed the finish line in 6:57.85. Penn earned All-County honors, but will not appear upstate because there is no race walk at that level due to state budget cuts a few years back.
Lady Hurricane Stephanie Vickers placed fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:19, earning All-County honors, and Kira Kelly took fourth in the high jump after reaching 5 feet 3 inches. She also took home All-County honors.
The 4×400-meter relay team of Vickers, Lauren Lorefice, Grace Gilbakian and Nora Murphy reset their own school record, finishing in 4:03. Lorefice also ran in the 100-meter dash and finished 11th in 13.02 seconds and just missed an All-County bid in the 200-meter dash. She finished seventh in 26.27 seconds. The top six earn All-County status.
As for the Westhampton Beach boys, Peter-John Ferrebee finished 15th overall in the outdoor pentathlon with 2,583 points. He also finished the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.85 seconds (11th), threw the shot put 32 feet (15th), reached 5 feet 2 ¼ inches (15th) in the high jump, and hit 18 feet 3 ¼ inches (13th) in the long jump. Finally, he finished the 1,500-meter race in 5:05.84, good enough for 13th place.
Alex Atwater finished ninth overall in the 800-meter run in 1:59.94 while Greg Horbatiuk took 13th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:30.46.
ESM’s Tom Meehan placed fifth in the 1,600-meter race, finishing in 4:20 to earn All-County honors. The 4×400-meter relay team of Meehan, Dan Tapia, Luke Lafferty and Dave Laguerra reset their own school record at 3:31, which placed them 14th overall.
Gary Murano finished 16th overall in the 3,200-meter race in 10:16.42. And Laguerra took 15th overall in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 3 inches.
Lady Shark Taylor McClay placed third overall in the 1,500-meter race in 4:46.28 and earned All-County honors. Alex DeCicco finished 10th overall in the 800-meter run in 2:21.75. Marisa Mazzoni took 21st overall in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, finishing in 71.39 seconds. Ashley Schafer also placed 21st overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 8:13.21.
