A 911 call reporting a possible downed parachuter in the water off Noyac’s Long Beach on Tuesday night sparked a search by police rescue teams—but the “victim” turned out to be nothing more than a cluster of “Dora the Explorer” balloons.
A beachgoer called police at about 8:50 p.m. to reported a person landing about 250 feet out into the water, according to Southampton Town Police Sergeant William Kiernan.
Divers were dispatched from the Town Police, and Sag Harbor Fire Department squads and scoured the water for nearly an hour before and slightly after the soggy balloons were pulled from the water. No one was harmed in the incident.
“I did walk in and see a ‘Dora the Explorer’ pinned on some of the doors here,” said the sergeant, who came on duty at headquarters the following morning, when first asked about it.
Dora the Explorer is a cartoon character in a Nickelodeon show.
