Suffolk County will break ground next year on a new fitness facility, one featuring an Olympic-size indoor pool, at the Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus in Northampton.
County Legislator Jay Schneiderman, who announced the start date for the project on Monday night, said the pool will be the first one available to students, as well as the public, in Southampton Town.
The project is expected to cost a total of $17 million, half of which will be covered by the state. The county portion of the funding was originally delayed until 2015 in Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s executive budget, but Mr. Schneiderman said that, as chair of the Bipartisan Capital Budget Working Group, he was able to move it to next year. The legislature approved the plan at its meeting on June 4.
“That was a big victory, because it is not a small amount of money,” Mr. Schneiderman said during Monday night’s Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community Association meeting, where he announced the project. “I’m really excited.”
The facility will measure 48,817 square feet and feature two multipurpose rooms, office space, a gymnasium, locker rooms, the pool, and strength training and aerobic rooms. Located off Speonk-Riverhead Road, the campus does not currently have a fitness facility or any area for physical education or athletics.
The Northampton campus serves about 3,000 students. Suffolk County Community College’s main campus is in Selden, and it has another campus in Brentwood.
“This facility will make our campus a complete campus, like the two in western Suffolk,” Mr. Schneiderman said in a prepared statement. “This facility will be a huge boost not only for the Eastern Campus of SCCC, but for the entire East End community.”
