Wainscott Man Arrested For Throwing Traffic Patrol Officer’s Ticket Book

A Wainscott man was arrested last week after authorities said he yelled at a female traffic patrol officer while getting a parking ticket—and then snatched the officer’s ticket book away and threw it.

Michael Kelley, 59, was arrested by Southampton Town Police at 12:15 p.m. on June 12 on Dune Road in Water Mill and charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor.

Authorities said Mr. Kelley, a contractor, was working near a construction site on Dune Road when police began ticketing cars that were illegally parked along the street. They said he began yelling at the officer, “You’re not going to be writing any tickets today!” before cursing at her. Mr. Kelley then grabbed her ticket book and threw it, according to police.

Mr. Kelley was taken into custody and brought to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing and arraignment. He was released later that day after posting $250 bail and is due back at Southampton Town Justice Court later this month, officials said.
