Pushed back a month due to inclement weather, a free outdoor family event is now set for Saturday, June 29, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Village Green in East Quogue.
The free celebration planned by the East Quogue Chamber of Commerce and the hamlet’s civic association will be open to the public and take place between noon and 4 p.m. at the corner of Montauk Highway and Lewis Road.
Parking will be available along Lewis Road, Montauk Highway and at the East Quogue Elementary School on Central Avenue.
There will be live music performed by local rock-n-roll cover band The Filthy Crickets, and food and drink will be available for purchase from several local restaurants. There also will be face painters, a strolling balloonist and a double slide for children.
East Quogue Civic Association board member Bob Kandell said he is hoping for a turnout of between 1,000 and 2,500 attendees on Saturday.
Acquired from the Wetterau family for $650,000, Southampton Town purchased the 3.6-acre lot for the Village Green in 1999 using money from its tax-funded Community Preservation Fund.
“It’s just a wonderful space. It’s where we hold our annual concert series and many other events,” East Quogue Chamber of Commerce President Donna Lanzetta said this week. “The park is basically the heart of our community.”
The event originally was set to take place on May 25, but was called off due to rain and unseasonably cold temperatures.
It is now or never for this anniversary celebration as a second rain date will not be set, Mr. Kandell said, citing the effort that it took organizers to rescheduled the celebration.
“This is it,” he said. “There was so much to do to make this second one a reality and we’re walking right into our concert series on the ninth.”
The hamlet’s annual summer concert series, which is free and sponsored by the chamber, civic and town, kicks off on Tuesday, July 9, when the band Six Guns will perform country music at the Village Green. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
The remaining schedule is as follows: Tuesday, July 16, Songs in the Attic will perform the Music of Billy Joel, 7 p.m.; Tuesday, July 23, The Filthy Crickets, 7 p.m.; and Tuesday, July 30, with Side FX (Southampton Hospital All Star Band) at 6:15 p.m., followed by The Fast Lane, an Eagles tribute band at 7 p.m.
