What To Do When Neighbors Behave Badly

Noise, construction, garbage, lawn mowers, dogs running free, illegal and overpopulated tenancy. With the summer season in full swing, there’s no shortage of disruptive events when it comes to bad neighbors.

And there is no reason to put up with them.

If a civil conversation about bad behavior does not alleviate the problem, there are a number of steps residents can take to fight back.

First, if personal safety is at risk, do not be afraid to call the local police. Look into filing a restraining order.

For those not at personal risk, but still irked by improper behavior, report the violation. Southampton Town residents can contact the Code Enforcement Department at 702-1700 or report a code violation online at southamptontownny.gov. In East Hampton Town, call the Division of Public Safety at 324-8787 or visit town.east-hampton.ny.us.

In the meantime, here’s hoping for a happy, peaceful and drama-free summer.
