A benefit for the owner of Riverhead’s Athens Grill, which was gutted by a grease fire last Friday evening, June 28, will be held this Sunday, July 7, at another Main Street restaurant.
The fundraiser, called “Rebuilding Athens: Neighbors Coming Together,” will run from 2 to 5 p.m. at theRIVERHEADPROJECT restaurant, located at 300 East Main Street. The benefit is being organized by the Riverhead Restaurant Group, a local coalition of eateries that was started by Dennis McDermott, owner of theRIVERHEADPROJECT.
“You plod along, struggle through January and February to get to this time of the year, and now their summer months are ruined,” Mr. McDermott said about Athens Grill and its owner, John Mantzopoulos. “Just really unfortunate,”
Other restaurants are asked to bring a food dish to serve to attendees who, in turn, will be asked to bring their checkbooks and make donations to help Mr. Mantzopoulos get back on his feet.
