This might seem like a silly and obvious thing for a journalist to say, but I remembered last night just how much I enjoy writing.Most writers I know profess to hate it. It seldom ever comes easy and most of us put it off until the last minute, when forced by deadline to turn in our assignments.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author and columnist Anna Quindlen summed it up best.
“I hate to write. I have to force myself every day to sit down and begin,” she wrote in the Wall Street Journal piece, “The Agony of Writing.”
I’ll admit it, most everything I write is at the zero hour, furiously typed out at 5 a.m. on the morning I go to print. I place myself in this ridiculous hole week after week without fail—fretting, cursing, racing against the clock—complaining about the amount of work I’ve taken on and the far too short bit of writing time I’ve allowed myself. But last night was different.
Knowing I had this column and two important features to write, not to mention a few more still to edit, I sat down after a long day of deadlines and began to tell a story. Two hours later, it was done and I was pleased and proud of what I had written. It was a feeling I don’t want to forget.
Continuing on a learned note, the Conservative Synagogue of the Hamptons will host a “Scholar-in-Residence Weekend” on Friday and Saturday, August 2 and 3, with Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller. Two topics, “Searching for God in Judaism: A Rational Quest for a Mystical Presence” and “Rediscovering Ahad Ha’am and His Zionism of Values,” will be explored by the rabbi.
Rabbi Seidler-Feller is the executive director of the Yitzhak Rabin Hillel Center for Jewish Life at UCLA, where he is a lecturer in the departments of Sociology and Near Eastern Languages. He is also on the faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute for Advanced Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, the Wexner Heritage Foundation and Loyola Marymount University. He was the rabbinic consultant to Barbra Streisand during the film “Yentl.”

Attention foodies, the “Preventive Health & Sustainable Technology Expo” is coming our way on Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28, at Dodds & Eder here in Sag Harbor.
Activities, which will be held from 10 a.m. into the evening on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, include an exhibitors showcase, a cooking demonstration, and talks by Congressman Tim Bishop, feng shui expert Candace Vorhaus, holistic veterinarian Jennifer Katz and filmmaker Jeffrey Smith.
Saturday night’s big event, Slow Food East End’s Slow “Food Riot Dinner” is filling up fast. The event, featuring local cuisine prepared by Todd Jacobs of Fresh Hamptons in Bridgehampton will also be held at Dodds & Eder.
The casual dinner party will feature live music, a raffle, and lots of great food and drink. All proceeds will benefit local farmers markets. The fundraiser kicks off on Saturday, July 27, with a cocktail party at 5:30 p.m. A family-style dinner will follow at 7 p.m. Tickets for the cocktail party are $75. Tickets for the dinner are $150 and also include admission to the cocktail party and access to both days of the fair.
