The driver of a pickup truck that prosecutors said ran a red light in Patchogue and broadsided a car, killing a 71-year-old East End resident in April, was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday morning, according to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.
The driver, Justin Klein, 23, of Medford, was charged by Suffolk County Police with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while ability impaired by drugs, two misdemeanors. According to court documents, several charges were added on Wednesday, including one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and second-degree manslaughter, both felonies, and excessive speeding, a violation.
The documents do not say how Mr. Klein pleaded to the charges.
Mr. Klein was driving southbound on Sills Road when police said he went through the red light at Gazzola Drive and crashed into a sedan driven by Camille Ricciardo. Ms. Ricciardo, who had lived in Southampton and Sag Harbor, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr. Klein was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. At the time of his arrest he was found to be in possession of a quantity of heroin, District Attorney Thomas Spota’s office said.
To date, he has been held at Suffolk County Jail in Riverside in lieu of $75,000 cash bail. An indictment was expected to be unsealed Wednesday.
