An Eastport firefighter was injured while responding to a barn fire off River Avenue in Eastport Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Francis “Bud” Mazura, a press officer for the department, said the man, whom he declined to identify, injured his hip and back and was transported by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.
Mr. Mazura said the call came in at 12:51 p.m. for a structure fire, and upon arrival, the firefighters found that a barn, about 30 feet wide and 80 feet long, had caught fire. They spent about an hour dousing the blaze, he said.
Officials said they did not know if the building was occupied at the time and they did not speculate on the cause of the fire. Southampton Town Fire Marshals are investigating.
The East Moriches, Center Moriches and Westhampton Beach Fire Departments also responded to the scene, along with the Westhampton Beach War Memorial Ambulance and East Moriches Community Ambulance.
