Parsonage Lane in Sagaponack was closed between Parsonage Pond Lane and Sagg Main Street on Thursday afternoon while firefighters extinguished a fire on a wheat field.
According to Bridgehampton Fire Chief Gary Horsburgh, the fire started at roughly 1:15 p.m. when the tractor a farmer was driving to cut wheat sparked, igniting the plants. By 2:15 p.m. firefighters had already left the scene and the road was reopened. No one was hurt as a result of the fire.
A 100-foot-by-100-foot patch of wheat was destroyed in the blaze, which took roughly an hour for responders to put out. Most of the wheat in the field is still intact, Chief Horsburgh said.
Eighteen members of the Bridgehampton Fire Department responded to the scene with a brush truck and a small pumper, according to the chief. Southampton Town Police were also at the scene.
