Hampton Bays Community Notes, July 25

We had a splendid time at the San Gennaro Feast of the Hamptons kickoff party last week over at Oakland’s Restaurant. A great big thank you to all those who helped make the evening a rousing success: Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce members; Simone from Scotto’s Pork Store; Monika Straka of GiGi’s Kids; Villa Paul Restaurant; Hampton Bays Diner; Buckley’s Inn Between; Rick Martel of Skidmore’s Sports & Styles; 1 North Steakhouse; Francesca’s Restaurant and Pizzeria; Katrinka’s Deli; Sundays on the Bay; Edgewater Restaurant; Shuckers Lobster and Clam Bar; Krieg’s Bakery; and Johnny Avino and his band—you guys rock! Also, thank you to all of the local businesses that contributed to the Chinese auction prizes.

And many, many thanks to Doug Oakland and his staff. They went above and beyond the call in the heat, serving the 300-plus people in attendance. The sunset was amazing!

Congratulations to Harry Fotopoulos! Harry wrote the winning essay for the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce 2013 scholarship competition and took home $1,000. Harry will be attending Boston University where he has his sights set on being a business administration major.

Three cheers for Bruce A. King Jr. Bruce was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force on July 18 at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

East End Hospice is pleased to offer its Camp Good Grief the week of August 19-23 at Peconic Dunes in Southold. The summer program is for children of all ages who have experienced a loss. There’s swimming, kayaking, nature walks, arts and crafts, lots of fun and a few surprises. There are no fees.

For more information or to register, please call Sarah Zimmerman or Angela Byrns at (631) 288-8400.

This is a great way for Scouts or school groups to earn community service hours. Host a Lemon-AID stand!

The Flying Point Foundation for Autism will provide the custom-made stand, lemonade and all the supplies. All you have to do is volunteer a couple of hours. If you know of someone who would be interested, email info@fpf4autism.org or call (631) 255-5664.

The Ellen Hermanson Foundation’s 18th annual Ellen’s Run 5K race/walk is coming up on Sunday, August 18, at 9 a.m., over at Parrish Memorial Hall at Southampton Hospital. The cost is $30 if you preregister, or $40 if you wait until the day of the race. All proceeds go to support breast cancer patients right here on the East End. Register online at www.ellensrun.org.
