Cyclist Airlifted To Stony Brook University Hospital After Crashing Into Pole On Dune Road

A bicyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after crashing into a telephone pole on Dune Road in Quogue shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, injuring his neck and back.

The 28-year-old New York City man was riding his bike westbound when a bee stung his leg, the man’s friend told police. The man swatted at the bee and while his head was down he accidentally rode into the pole, Quogue Village Police Sergeant Thomas Mullen said.

Police were called to the scene at 1:14 p.m., Mullen said. A Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance responded to the scene and took the man to the Quogue Field Club where a Suffolk County Police Helicopter picked him up to transport him to Stony Brook.

The man was picked up at about 2 p.m., Sgt. Mullen said, adding that the injuries were serious but not necessarily life threatening.
