Yellow plastic pylons that were placed along the double yellow line on a stretch of Noyac Road in Noyac are part of an experiment by the Southampton Town Highway Department to slow down traffic on the curve, which passes a local church.
Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor said that residents and churchgoers have been asking for some measures to slow down traffic in the area for years. The roadway is a 30 mph zone, while most of the rest of Noyac Road is 40 mph.
The 25 pylons, each about 4 feet high, divide the roadway. Mr. Gregor said the intention is to create a little “friction” for drivers that will instinctively make them slow down some.
As of Monday, two of the pylons had already been broken off by cars.
