Sunrise Highway Crash Closes Westbound Lanes For 30 Minutes On Sunday Evening

A two-car crash on Sunrise Highway near Hampton Bays on Sunday evening closed the westbound lanes for about a half hour, though State Police now say the scene is clear and the highway is reopened.

State Police said there was a two-vehicle crash at approximately 6 p.m., and one of the eastbound vehicles rolled as a result of the accident. Witnesses said the vehicle, an SUV, had come to rest in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway.

A Medevac helicopter landed on the closed portion of Sunrise Highway to take one of the driver directly to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of undisclosed injuries. Southampton Town Police and Hampton Bays Fire Department officials also responded to the scene.

State Police said neither vehicle had passengers.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, State Police said.
