Country songwriting legend Hugh Prestwood performs live on the East End on Thursday, August 15, with Caroline Doctorow and Inda Eaton at the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead.
The “Songtrails” writers-in-the-round-style concert will feature an evening of collaboration between Mr. Prestwood, a Greenport-based Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, and South Fork-based talents, Ms. Doctorow and Ms. Eaton. The show will be recorded and broadcast on WPKN radio on Saturday, September 7.
“Hugh Prestwood is a legend in the songwriting world,” Ms. Doctorow said during a telephone interview last week. “I have known him for 15 years and I have learned so much about songwriting from Hugh.”
She complimented the balance Mr. Prestwood strikes between art and commerce with his music.
“He manages to be both commercial and writes beautiful pieces of art at the same time, beauty that is not always found in commercial country radio,” she said.
Mr. Prestwood has written number-one hits for Randy Travis, Trisha Yearwood, Michael Johnson, Shenandoah, Crystal Gayle and Collin Raye. His songs have also been performed by such notable artists as Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor, Jerry Douglas and Alison Krauss. Three of his songs have been nominated for Grammys in the “Best Performance” category.
Ms. Doctorow, the host of the monthly WPKN folk radio show “Songtrails,” is a chart-topping artist whose music is rooted in the folk music of the 1960s. She has opened for The Band, Alison Krauss, Tim O’Brien, Richie Havens, The Subdudes and Tom Paxton, to name a few. She has just released a new album, “Little Lovin’ Darling,” and will be performing songs from it, plus a few classics.
Ms. Eaton, an acoustic singer songwriter, has an original style that blends mellow acoustic with country western and classic rock and roll. She has toured all over the country and has opened for such big-name musicians as Molly Hatchet, Blues Traveler, Hootie and the Blowfish, LeAnn Rimes and John Hiatt.
