UPDATE, 5:44 P.M.:
The woman was found dead after 11:30 a.m., three nautical miles from Montauk Point, according to Petty Officer Erik Swanson, a spokesman with the Coast Guard. He said the woman, who is the wife of the boat’s captain, fell over the stern just after midnight. He said he could not release either of their names, but said that the woman is of Spanish descent and is from Palisades Park, New Jersey.
A “big search” was underway from around midnight to 11:30 this morning, according to Petty Officer Swanson. The Coast Guard sent out a cutter and helicopters from Station Cape Cod, and East Hampton Town Police aided in the search with police boats.
The woman was found by a local boater, a good Samaritan, according to Petty Officer Swanson. He said details of how she fell overboard are sketchy right now.
The incident is currently under investigation by East Hampton Town Police.
According to the Coast Guard, there were two people on board the boat — named In The Clutch, from Palisades Park, New Jersey. When asked if there was any indication of foul play, the officer said he did not know.
The Coast Guard is searching for a 39-year-old female who fell off a recreational boat late Saturday night.
The search began at midnight when the woman, who was not wearing a life jacket, according to the Coast Guard, fell overboard the 45-foot-vessel in Block Island Sound.
The search is on-going—the Coast Guard is searching 2 miles north of Montauk Point and in both directions east and west.
Officials declined to give the name of the boat or identify the woman.
