Police Unable To Locate Man Who May Have Been Suicidal In Sagaponack On Monday

Southampton Town Police spent 45 minutes Monday night searching for a potentially suicidal man in a cornfield near Montauk Highway in Sagaponack, slowing down passing traffic and yielding no results.

Police received a call from a passing motorist who said a white male jumped in front of his car shortly before 10 p.m. just east of Sagg Main Street. The motorist told police he believed the man was trying to kill himself.

When the responding officers arrived on the scene and attempted to speak to the subject, he fled into the cornfield, Southampton Town Police Sergeant Howard Kalb said.

Several Town Police officers and one New York State Trooper K-9 unit contributed to the search but they were unable to locate the man.
