Southampton Pilot Injured In Shelter Island Plane Crash

Three people, including a Southampton man, were treated for minor injuries following a small plane crash on Shelter Island over the weekend.

Marc Chiffert, 55, who splits his time between Southampton and Manhattan, was flying a 1997 Cessna Skyhawk 172R aircraft when it crashed into a brushy area with a pond located at the south end of the Shelter Island airstrip, a spot leased by the Shelter Island Pilots Association, at 3 p.m. on Sunday. There were two passengers in the plane, according to the Shelter Island Town Police Department.

Police said they did not know what caused the crash and that it was being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
