Let’s hear it for Lori Ackerson! This is Lori’s 26th year teaching art at the Hampton Bays High School. You do a great job with our kids, Lori.

And while I’m on the subject of kids and school, they are back in session next week. The first day of classes in Hampton Bays is Monday, September 9. Please drive carefully.

Walter Flaherty had a fall last month and is now recovering at the Westhampton Care Center. Walter is a member of the Southampton Town Senior Center and the American Legion Hand-Aldrich Post 924.

Incidentally, Walter was the very first veteran to be honored in the Hampton Bays Elementary School’s Veteran of the Month program. All of your friends wish you a speedy recovery, Walter.

Beverly Livernoche and Mike Meehan are sharing the space this month in the Helen Gould Room at the Hampton Bays Public Library on Ponquogue Avenue. Mike’s paintings are done in oil and watercolor while Beverly’s works, titled “Instant Gratification” and “Up Close and Personal,” are a series of photographs and a prose poem.

The Southampton Anti-Bias Task Force, which is supported by many other organizations and businesses, is hosting its annual Great East End Community Picnic this Saturday, September 7, from 1 until 5 p.m., at Red Creek Park, located at 102 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays.

There will be food, entertainment and lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Please bring along a pot luck dish for five or six people to share. For more information, call (631) 728-5558.

The Dominican Sisters Family Health Service is having its Benefit Golf Outing on Monday, September 9, at the Atlantic Country Club in Bridgehampton. Do you have an award-winning chili or clam chowder recipe? Well, the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce invites local residents and restaurants to participate in its 15th annual Chili/Chowder Contest on Sunday, September 22, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Boardy Barn on Montauk Highway.

Katherine Constantopoulos is off to High Point University to begin her freshman year on the campus in High Point, North Carolina.

And Timothy Berglin, Austin Ferreira, Daniela Gutierrez and Shpresa Mati have all been admitted as members of the Class of 2017 at SUNY at Oneonta. Good luck!
