The Westhampton Beach girls tennis team opened the season with a 5-2 win over Mercy at home on Monday.
At first singles, Laura Halsey beat Mercy’s Shannon Merker 6-2, 6-4, and at second singles, Jodi Sipala prevailed in three sets, beating Miranda Zeboski 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Westhampton Beach’s Jane Podlaski lost 6-2, 6-3 to Jaime Lessard at third singles, but teammate Sarah Strebel beat Magda Duda 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at fourth singles.
In doubles action, Westhampton Beach’s first doubles team of Heather Marcella and Jessica Proust lost to Jackie Zaweski and Delaney Macchirole 6-0, 6-4. At second doubles, Lady Hurricanes Gen Spanarkel and Yesha Dalal won in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, and at third doubles, Sabrina Salvi and Bo Felske won 6-0, 6-4.
Westhampton Beach lost nine seniors to graduation, including singles players Claudia Purkis, Nisha Ghayalod and Bridget Stucklen as well as doubles players Sammi Vickers, Hayley Bester, Aimee Kandell, Kate Lewis and Jessica Mendelson. Halsey, a junior, and Sipala, a senior, will take the first singles spots, while Podlaski, as senior, and Strebel, a junior, will fill in the other singles spots.
Head coach John Czartosieski said he has not finalized his doubles lineup, but that newcomers Marcella and Prost, both seniors, will be in the mix along with senior Spanarkel, sophomore Dalal, eighth-grader Felske, junior Salvi and sophomores Mira Patel and Hailey Ciolino.
Despite big losses to graduation, Czartosieski still expects his team to fight for supremacy in League VII, along with William Floyd, Ross, and East Hampton.
“We will be somewhere in the mix as long as the girls continue to work on improving,” he said.
