The East Hampton girls tennis team got its League VII season off to a good start on Wednesday, September 11, with a 5-2 win over Mercy in Riverhead.
Last year’s All-State doubles team of Dannie Dunphy and Gillian Neubert prevailed 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) at first doubles over Mercy’s Delaney Macchirole and Jackie Zaweski, while East Hampton also won at second doubles, with Lily Kot and Melanie Schwagerl beating Colleen Edwards and Sally Burdilazer 6-1, 6-1.
The Lady Bonackers got an exciting win at first singles, with Carly Grossman prevailing in three sets with Shannon Merker, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. At second singles, Isabel Peters beat Micaela Zebroski 6-3, 6-4, and at fourth singles, East Hampton got another win with Maggie Pizzo beating Katie Brownfiel 6-1, 6-0.
Mercy scored its points at third singles and third doubles. At third singles, Jamie Lessard beat Maddie Aldrich 6-2, 6-1, and at third doubles, Magda Duda and Savannah Sieska beat Maxine DeHavenon and Mackenzie Scheurer 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
East Hampton was scheduled to face Ross on Friday but the game was rained out and rescheduled for Tuesday, September 17. Results will be in next week’s edition.
The Lady Mariners moved to 2-2 overall, 2-1 in League VIII, with a pair of wins last week, getting past Riverhead in a 4-3 match on the road Friday after beating Southold/Greenport 7-0 at home two days earlier.
The second doubles team of Mariah Neknez and Megan Goleski earned the clinching point in the win over Riverhead, beating Jessica Purick and Abigail Wehunt in three sets. The Lady Mariners won the first set 6-4 and were up 5-1 in the second set before losing 7-6 (7-3), but they came back to win the third set 6-2. At first singles, Noa Dubin beat Samantha Carter 6-0, 6-0, and at second singles, Cecelia Scheuer beat Kathryn Chemilewski 6-1, 6-0. Keynu Banks lost 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 3-6 to Cassidy Brown at third singles, while Jade Kalbacher beat Amy Methsan 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles.
At first doubles, Marcelina Kropiwnicka and Julia Kepczynska lost 5-7, 1-6 to Lydia Keifert and Courtney Troyan, and at third doubles, Pauline Delacruz and Johanna Moore lost 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 to Danielle Alaimo and Kate Prijalkina.
Southampton was dominant against Greenport/Southold, winning all its matches in straight sets. At first singles, Dubin beat Alexandra Small 6-0, 6-2; at second singles, Scheuer beat Victoria Pieunik 6-0, 6-0; at third singles, Banks beat Jaime Grigonia 6-1, 6-0; and at fourth singles Kalbacher beat Caroline Metz 6-0, 6-0. At first doubles, Kropiwnicka and Kepczynska beat Shannon Quinn and Jessica Rizzo 6-2, 6-1; at second doubles, Moore and Delacruz beat Willow Wilcenski and Caroline Goehring 6-1, 6-0, and Goleski and Neknez won by forfeit at third doubles.
