The fall boys golf season got off to a good start for both Southampton and East Hampton in League VIII last week, as both teams enjoyed road wins, which are typically hard to come by on an unfamiliar course. The Mariners were dominant in an 8.5-0.5 win over Center Moriches at Rock Hill Country Club on Thursday, while East Hampton edged Pierson 3.5-2.5 at the Noyac Golf Club on the same day.

East Hampton head coach Claude Beudert called his team’s win over Pierson “a pleasant surprise,” saying he figured the match would be a close one. He was correct, as three of the six matches ended in ties, and one was decided by one shot. A pair of seventh-graders ended up being clutch for the Bonackers—playing in the number two spot, Turner Foster beat Pierson’s Ben Kushner 45-49, and in the number six spot, his classmate, Nathan Wright, beat Pierson’s Matt Burke 49-53. Those margins of victory helped East Hampton gain a 239-247 edge in team stroke total. At the number one spot, East Hampton’s lone senior, Matt Griffiths, halved his match with Jack Bori, with both shooting a 44. Bonacker Stephen Kane and Pierson’s Garrett Potter also halved their match at 51 each, as did Bonacker Josue Palacios and Pierson’s Jack Brown at the four spot, each with 50. At the fifth spot, East Hampton junior Regis O’Neill lost by one stroke, 54-53, to Theo Gray.

Beudert said the conditions were tough that day, with the wind making it hard to get close to the par of 36. He said beating a typically strong Pierson team on its home course was a nice boost for his young squad early in the season.

“It sets the tone for us for the year,” he said. “If things hold steady, we’ll do all right.”

Southampton, the defending league champ, didn’t have much drama in its win, owning a wide margin of victory in team stroke total, 215-246 on the par 35 at Rock Hill Country Club. Senior Matt Kreymborg won his match with a 36 at the number one spot, followed by senior Eddie McLauglin, who tied his match with a 43. At the third spot, freshman Christian Oakley won his match with a 36, followed by junior Matt Morgani (42), sophomore Tim Kreymborg (49) and senior Cole Farnam (48).
