Gallo Tallies Lone Goal In Win Over Bayport

After losing most of its starting lineup to graduation and with a new coach on the sidelines, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Southampton field hockey team this preseason. But so far, the young team—which doesn’t have a single senior on the roster—has proven it should be taken seriously in Division III.

The Lady Mariners improved to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in division with a 1-0 home win over Bayport/Blue Point on Monday. Junior Meggie Gallo scored the lone goal with 7:59 left in the first half off a perfectly executed corner. Shelby Pierson pushed the ball inbounds to start the corner, sending it to the top of the circle, where Gallo drilled a hard drive that clanged off the backboard.

Alex Ambrose made two saves to get the shutout win for Southampton.

Before beating Bayport, Southampton suffered a tough 3-2 overtime home loss to traditional powerhouse Sayville on September 11. Both Bayport and Sayville are new to Division III this year.

In that loss, the Lady Mariners had the early advantage, taking a 2-0 halftime lead off goals from Miranda Maloney and Victoria Russo. But Sayville had the upper hand in the second half, and forced overtime when Samantha Cascardo scored with just less than 10 minutes in regulation. Justine O’Reilly scored the winner with 3:37 left in overtime.

Southampton head coach Jess Zukosky said she was happy with her team’s play in the first half, but said that a few injuries forced her to move players around in the second half, which took the team out of its rhythm. Despite the loss, Zukosky was happy with her team’s effort, pointing out that Sayville was ranked second in the division to start the season while Southampton was ranked ninth.
