The Google Street View car has been making its way around East End streets for the last several months. The car’s driver, who said he was not allowed to give his name or interviews, said informally that he lives farther west on Long Island and just drives all day long, during which the camera captures a panoramic view of everything in its path.
The cars were first launched by Google in 2007 and were expanded to include more rural areas in 2008. Each car carries nine cameras that allow it to record a 360-degree view from a little higher than 8 feet. The captured images are then stitched together to record a rough 3D image.
To see if the car has recorded a specific home or business, type the address into google.com.
