After two non-league matches, the Hampton Bays girls gymnastics team is 1-2. After winning 121.5-108.45 over West Babylon at home on September 12, the Lady Baymen dropped their tri-meet at home to both Patchogue/Medford and Bay Shore on Thursday, September 19. Hampton Bays scored 118.95 points to Bay Shore’s 160.45 points and Pat/Med’s 140.92.
Hampton Bays has a small team this season with just eight girls on the roster. But head coach Amy Stangasser said the team has enough girls to compete, since five scores count for every event. The team has at least five girls for each event and four of the five are all-round athletes.
This year’s team includes Kaylee Catena, Gabby Morea, Rebecca Martinez, Cassandra McCuen and Drew Zaweski. Jami DiPierdomenico, Cindy Jimenez and Melisa Bradnick joined the team late and are still working on getting enough practices to compete in meets.
Catena scored a 7.85 on the vault in the team’s victory over West Babylon. Morea scored an 8.05 on beam.
In the tri-meet loss, Morea completed a half-on, full-off vault and scored a 7.95. She also had a great floor routine, according to Stangasser. Her strong tumbling resulted in an 8.0. Catena had a steady beam routine and finished with an 8.15.
