Garbage Bags Filled With Marijuana Found During Traffic Stop In Water Mill

Two men were arrested in Water Mill on Saturday night after Southampton Town Police said they found more than 10 pounds of freshly harvested marijuana inside their car during a routine traffic stop.

William Whelan, 43, of Lake Grove and Daniel Dost, 38, of Centereach were arrested at 9:08 p.m. after they were stopped for a traffic violation near the intersection of Deerfield and Head of Pond roads. Upon investigation, the officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

A search revealed two large garbage bags in the back of the vehicle filled with more than 10 pounds of freshly harvested marijuana, police said.

Both suspects were placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing. Their vehicle was impounded.

Police said they do not know where the marijuana was harvested or where the two men were heading at the time.

Mr. Dost, the driver, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony, and unlawfully growing marijuana and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors. He was also charged unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and ticketed for several traffic violations.

Both men were arraigned Sunday and Mr. Dost was remanded to the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside after failing to post $8,100 bail while Mr. Whelan was held after failing to post $10,100 bail, according to authorities.
